How Biometric Face Matching Actually Works: A Plain-English Guide

Biometric face matching is everywhere — but most people using it have no idea what happens under the hood. This guide explains the math, the thresholds, and why accuracy is more nuanced than a percentage.

Every time you unlock your phone with your face, pass through airport e-gates, or verify your identity for a financial account, a biometric face matching system is making a probabilistic decision about whether the face it sees is the one it expects. Face Matching vs Face Recognition: The Distinction

These terms are used interchangeably in popular media but describe different tasks:

Face recognition (1:N matching) — a face is compared against a large database to identify who a person is. This is the technology used in law enforcement identification systems and some surveillance applications.

Face matching (1:1 verification) — a face is compared against a single reference image to confirm whether two images depict the same person. This is the technology used in identity verification: "is the selfie you just took the same person as the photo on your passport?"

Identity verification uses face matching, not face recognition. The distinction matters for privacy, accuracy, and regulatory treatment.

How Face Matching Works: The Embedding Step

Modern face matching systems work in two stages:

Stage 1 — Feature extraction (encoding). A neural network analyses the face image and maps it to a high-dimensional numerical vector — typically 128 to 512 floating-point numbers. This vector is called a face embedding or face template. It captures the mathematical relationship between facial features (eye spacing, nose geometry, jaw shape, etc.) in a form that is efficient to compare.

The neural network is not looking for specific features the way a human would. It has been trained on tens of millions of face pairs and has learned to extract whatever numerical representation best distinguishes different people.

Stage 2 — Similarity computation. The two embeddings (one from the reference image, one from the live capture) are compared using a distance metric — usually cosine similarity or Euclidean distance. The result is a similarity score between 0 and 1, where 1 represents identical embeddings and 0 represents maximum dissimilarity.

A score of 0.97 does not mean "97% sure it is the same person." It means the geometric distance between the two face vectors is very small. The relationship between that score and the probability of a correct match depends on the model, the training data, and the image conditions.

The Threshold Decision

The similarity score alone does not determine pass or fail. The system administrator sets a decision threshold — a score above which the match is accepted and below which it is rejected.

This is where most of the real-world complexity lives. Setting the threshold is a trade-off between two types of error:

False Acceptance Rate (FAR) — the probability that the system accepts an impostor (someone who is not who they claim to be). Lower threshold = higher FAR = more fraud gets through.

False Rejection Rate (FRR) — the probability that the system rejects a genuine user (someone who is who they claim to be). Higher threshold = higher FRR = more legitimate users get blocked.

These two rates move in opposite directions. Increasing the threshold reduces FAR but increases FRR. The right balance depends entirely on the use case — a high-security access control system tolerates higher FRR because the cost of letting an impostor through is catastrophic; a consumer onboarding flow tolerates higher FAR because the cost of rejecting a legitimate user is also high.

  • Pose angle above 30 degrees from frontal significantly degrades performance for most models
  • Resolution below 300 pixels across the face region increases false rejection rates substantially
  • Image compression artefacts in the ID document photo can alter the embedding representation

High-quality face matching systems include an image quality assessment step before embedding generation — rejecting or flagging low-quality inputs before they can produce unreliable similarity scores.

The Role of Liveness Detection

A face match that does not include liveness detection is not a complete identity check. Without liveness:

  • A fraudster can hold a printed photograph of the genuine user in front of the camera
  • A video replay of the genuine user passes the face match
  • A deepfake overlay defeats the comparison entirely

Liveness detection confirms that the face being captured is a live, three-dimensional human face — not a static image, video replay, or synthetic overlay. It is the layer that makes face matching meaningful in a security context rather than just a convenience feature.
